Biden rips GOP for ‘banning books’: ‘No such thing as someone else’s child’

President Joe Biden swiped at Republicans, such as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), accusing them of banning books as part of their push against anti-woke school curricula.
“As a student of history, I never thought I’d be a president who was fighting against elected officials trying to ban and banning books,” Biden said Monday at a White House event honoring the Council of Chief State School Officers’s 2023 Teachers of the Year. “Empty shelves don’t help kids learn very much. And I’ve never met a parent who wants a politician dictating what their kid can learn, what they can think, and who they can be.”

“There’s no such thing as someone else’s child. No such thing as someone else’s child,” he said. “Our nation’s children are all our children.”
Biden also underscored his gun control reforms after a series of school shootings and related incidents, including a 6-year-old who shot his teacher last month in Virginia.
“Did you ever think you would have to teach kids to duck and cover?” the president said. “We used to do that a hundred years ago because of nuclear war.”
“Teaching should not be a life-threatening occupation,” he said.

First lady Jill Biden, a community college English and writing professor, echoed her husband’s comments about the country’s collective responsibility in raising children.
“There’s no divide between those who love our students and those who teach them because we all do both,” she said earlier in the event.
