At least one person died and four others were injured after a New York City parking garage collapsed Tuesday afternoon, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The collapse of the five-story parking garage in Lower Manhattan prompted a large response from police and first responders, who worked to rescue people caught under the rubble. The number of casualties was confirmed by the mayor in a press conference Tuesday.

Adams was joined by New York City Fire Department Chief of Operations John Esposito, who revealed that there were six workers inside the building when it collapsed. The sixth worker was rescued but refused medical treatment.

Adams and Esposito revealed that first responders had withdrawn all personnel and were instead relying on drones and robots to conduct their search, as the structure was still unstable.

“I do want to point out that thank God we had the robotic dog that was able to go in the building,” Adams said. “This is ideally what we talked about, not sending a human being inside a building that’s unstable. We were also able to use the technology of a drone to give a real visualization of what is happening in this building at this time.”

He continued, “By using the necessary technology, we’re able to get a clearer view of what’s happening inside the building for the most part and do whatever we can to see if there are any more victims right now.”

“We responded to a call of a collapse in the building. We had firefighters inside the building conducting searches. The building was continuing to collapse. We made the decision to remove all people from the building,” Esposito echoed. “Our robotics unit happened to be nearby. They were on scene very quickly.”

He added that they believe everyone in the building at the time of the collapse is accounted for. The rescue and cleanup will be a “prolonged operation.”

Authorities added that they don’t believe the incident was anything more than a structural collapse or that there was any foul play.

The robotics unit being hailed as instrumental in the operation was only introduced last week after an earlier introduction was canceled after widespread criticism.
