Republican Bernie Moreno entered the 2024 battle to flip Ohio’s Senate seat red Tuesday, marking his second consecutive run for a Senate seat.

A businessman with a history in auto sales and blockchain, Moreno cast himself as an outsider as he seeks the party nod to square off against incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) next year in one of the most competitive races for the upper chamber.

“When insiders lose, we win. I’m Bernie Moreno. I’m an outsider conservative running for Senate. Together, we’ll turn Washington inside out,” Moreno declared in a campaign launch video. “We’re losing our country because corrupt and cowardly politicians from both parties sell us out.”

Former President Donald Trump commented on the GOP Ohio Senate primary earlier this month, describing Moreno as a “highly respected businessman from the GREAT STATE of OHIO” who “would not be easy to beat.”

Moreno endorsed Trump’s 2024 bid in February and commended the former president.

“President Trump put us on a path to prosperity, but today, China’s buying our land, drugs pour through our borders while our tax dollars flow to foreign countries, and our jobs stream overseas,” Moreno said. “I’m doing this because I firmly believe career politicians have put us in a ditch and we need outsiders to fix this country.”

Trump loomed large over the 2022 GOP primary to fill the post vacated by former Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH).

Moreno withdrew his first campaign in February 2022 after asking for and then attending a meeting with Trump. He later helped J.D. Vance prepare for debates and fundraise in that election.

Border security was a top subject for Moreno in 2022. Moreno is an immigrant who came from Colombia when he was 5 years old.

So far, he is the second prominent Republican to dive into the race, following Republican state Sen. Matt Dolan, who enjoyed a late-stage boost in the last race and finished third behind Vance and former state Treasurer Josh Mandel.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) are also rumored to be mulling a run.

Moreno is set to debut his campaign with a tour of the Buckeye State.

Republicans are heading into the 2024 Senate cycle with a considerable advantage. The GOP only has to defend 11 seats, while Democrats must defend 23, including three held by Democratic-aligned independent senators.
