Gaines said she is not in a fight to protect women’s sports from transgender women for herself but for others.

On Friday, Porter appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher, saying Gaines has been “using things to kind of get likes and get clicks” before fellow guest Piers Morgan pushed back to note that he sees Gaines standing up for “women’s rights to fairness and equality.” Porter added that she is “speaking up for herself, and that is her prerogative, and I respect her free speech.”
In response, Gaines said she has put her own career plans on hold to stand up for women’s sports equality.
“Hey @RepKatiePorter I’m not speaking up for myself,” Gaines tweeted. “I’m done playing sports. I’m not fighting for me. I’m actually supposed to be in dental school this year. But I’ve changed my life plans because I see what’s at stake if someone doesn’t fight for the present and next generation.”
“Why is it always women fighting against sex-based protections?” Gaines added. “That will forever be beyond me.”

Gaines began speaking out against transgender women’s participation in women’s sports following then-University of Pennsylvania transgender swimmer Lia Thomas’s NCAA Division I national championship.
She most recently made headlines when a mob of transgender activists harassed her at San Francisco State University during a speaking event advocating women’s rights in sports.
