Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) called President Joe Biden a “weak” president but believes that Biden will hold a strong advantage in the 2024 election due to being an incumbent.

Gingrich cited the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 as an example of Biden’s weakness, saying it makes the United States unreliable on the world stage while speaking with John Catsimatidis on the WABC radio show The Cats Roundtable on Sunday.

“When you’re a very weak president, who doesn’t understand that we have real enemies, and doesn’t understand the requirements of real stakes, the world begins to realize that the United States is very unreliable,” Gingrich said.

However, Gingrich said despite Biden’s performance as president, the incumbency advantage should protect Biden from any serious challenges he may receive in the Democratic primary.

“Incumbent presidents have enormous power. Jimmy Carter beat Teddy Kennedy, Gerald Ford beat Ronald Reagan, it’s very tough to take out an incumbent president inside his own party. You don’t know this far out whether Biden will feel healthy enough or what’s going on. My working assumption is that whoever runs, whether it’s Biden or someone else, you’re gonna have to carry the burden of four years of bad government, bad economy, open borders, weakness around the world, raising crime rates,” Gingrich said on the radio show.

When asked about the Republican primary for the 2024 presidential election, Gingrich called Trump “clearly the front-runner” but also said “you can’t rule out” Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and added that Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) record is “very attractive.” He did warn, however, that “many things can happen” in the primary.

“Many things can happen between now, and the nomination, and a lot more can happen between now and the general election,” Gingrich said.

The only major Republican candidates who have declared are Trump, former Govs. Nikki Haley (R-SC) and Asa Hutchinson (R-AR), and entrepreneur and author Vivek Ramaswamy. DeSantis is widely expected to announce his candidacy in late May or early June.

On the Democratic side, author Marianne Williamson and lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have declared, while Biden is expected to announce a bid later this year. Williamson and Kennedy are both considered long-shot candidates, while Biden is the heavy favorite if he runs.
