MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) is nervous that his party is going to blow it in 2024 due to internal squabbling and a penchant for scaring independents.

“When we are always yelling at each other, we are not going to get it done,” Sununu warned at a National Rifle Association forum. “Just to talk about the politics, I get nervous about 2024. If we don’t have those independents, if we don’t have those folks back on the team, those disenfranchised voters, it ain’t gonna happen for us.”

TWO 2024 GOP CONTENDERS SQUARE OFF ON CULTURE WAR: ‘THE KINDS OF DEBATES WE NEED TO BE HAVING’

A popular governor in the Granite State, Sununu has been mulling a 2024 run. He has also fretted that former President Donald Trump will lose to President Joe Biden again in 2020 if given the party nod.

“No one gets inspired by getting yelled at, I try to remind them,” he said. “Look like you’re enjoying your job.”

Sununu touted his record on firearms as governor, recalling how he vetoed a red flag law and signed a constitutional carry policy. The governor argued that tragic mass shootings should be addressed through reforms to mental health treatment and more robust law enforcement.

“If you see these tragedies, these mass shootings in school, it’s real. It’s at an unprecedented level,” he said. “And every time there’s a mass shooting, every time there’s a tragedy, what does the Left do? They blame you. They blame politics.”

His address at the NRA’s annual conference, held in Indianapolis, coincided with speeches from other potential 2024 aspirants, such as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump, and more.

Back in February, Sununu formed a political action committee titled “Live Free or Die” to test the waters in the donor sphere as he contemplates a 2024 run. Sununu has long pressed the GOP to push a forward-looking message and be mindful of culture war distractions.

“At the end of the day, we have to ask if we are going to sit back and whine. Or are we going to get it done,” he said. “Let’s get it done.”
