Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth issued a statement Friday following the controversy surrounding transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney’s partnership with Bud Light.

“We never intended to be part of a discussion that divides people,” the statement titled “Our Responsibility to America” read. “We are in the business of bringing people together over a beer.”

The internet almost broke April 1 when the face of arguably the most famous transgender figure on the planet appeared on a can of Bud Light.

Dressed like Audrey Hepburn from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, wearing a black dress, black gloves, a hair updo, and necklace, Mulvaney posted a promotion video carrying five Bud Light cans.

“This month, I celebrated my ‘Day 365’ of womanhood, and Bud Light sent me possibly the best gift ever … a can with my face on it,” Mulvaney added.

Conservative backlash to the content creator’s partnership with Anheuser-Busch was fast and furious.

A boycott of all Anheuser-Busch products was demanded by key political figures on the Right.

The fallout from the partnership with Mulvaney has dealt blows to both Anheuser-Busch’s finances and reputation.

Whitworth said he feels a responsibility to ensure “every consumer feels proud of the beer” his company brews, according to his statement.

“My time serving this country taught me the importance of accountability and the values upon which America was founded: freedom, hard work and respect for one another. As CEO of Anheuser-Busch, I am focused on building and protecting our remarkable history and heritage,” the statement read.

“I care deeply about this country, this company, our brands and our partners. I spend much of my time traveling across America, listening to and learning from our customers, distributors and others.”

Anheuser-Busch employs about 18,000 workers, and the independent distributors it partners with have nearly 50,000 employees.

These “valued colleagues” and Anheuser-Busch’s millions of fans are of the utmost importance to Whitworth, according to the statement.

“We have thousands of partners, millions of fans and a proud history supporting our communities, military, first responders, sports fans and hard-working Americans everywhere,” Whitworth wrote.

“Moving forward, I will continue to work tirelessly to bring great beers to consumers across our nation.”
