High school student accidentally shot by deputy during training exercise

At least one high school student in Indiana was injured after being accidentally shot by a sheriff’s deputy during a school training exercise.
The incident occurred at South Vermillion High School when 19-year veteran Vermillion County Deputy Tim DisPennett was leading a law enforcement class in different scenarios, according to the Indiana State Police.

During the instruction, the deputy “accidentally discharged his service weapon striking a student in the classroom,” police said.
The class was designed to teach students how to be law enforcement officers through a “bad guy” scenario, and at least eight students were in the class.
DisPennett was explaining a drill when he drew his service firearm, instead of his training weapon, and opened fire.
The student who was wounded suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to a report.
“They use dummy guns, plastic guns, in this situation. It was a mistake that was made on behalf of the sheriff deputy,” superintendent of South Vermillion Schools, Dave Chapman, said. “[It’s an] unfortunate incident, but they’ve gone through this training quite frequently, so it was just one of those unfortunate incidents.”
“When I got on the scene, [the victim] was on the stretcher with the EMTs, kind of cutting up a little bit,” Chapman said. “When he asked how his pain level was, he said it felt like a sting. So, it was a graze, a superficial wound, and he was going to be transported to the hospital in Terre Haute to have it looked at.”

DisPennett has since been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
