Shooting near DC funeral home leaves one dead

A shooting outside a funeral home on Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C., has left one dead and several injured.
The shooting occurred shortly after noon, with officers responding to a call in the 4000 block of Benning Road NE near Stewart Funeral Home.

Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said during a press conference that a funeral was being held and had just let out. A Metropolitan police officer reported gunshots at about 12:17 p.m.
Contee said four people were shot in what police believe to be a targeted event. One person, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene, and three others were taken to hospitals in the area with serious but not life-threatening injuries, the chief said.
Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting or identified a gunman but are interviewing people to understand what happened in the events leading up to the shooting.
There does not appear to have been an exchange of gunfire, Contee said.
The funeral was for a homicide victim that died in late March, and the family requested “additional police presence” for the funeral, which is why a D.C. police officer was near the incident.

“At the family’s request, oftentimes, we do when we have homicide victims, we will extend additional police presence in the area of the funeral,” Contee said. “We’ll do that. That’s routine. Nothing that’s out of the ordinary, especially when we are talking about homicide victims.”
“It’s unfortunate that someone would be so brazen to do such an act, let alone at a funeral,” Contee continued. “I mean, how low can you be of a human being to target other people at a funeral?”
