A Democrat-aligned group is seeking to tie House Republicans to “MAGA extremists” amid the indictment of former President Donald Trump in Manhattan, according to a memo.
The memo, obtained by Politico, details how the group Facts First sees the Trump indictment as the “perfect opportunity” to tie the two factions together heading into the 2024 elections.
REPUBLICANS WORRY TRUMP’S ‘DEFUND THE FBI’ PUSH COULD HURT THEIR CRIME MESSAGE
“The current and likely additional indictments against former President Trump promise to take up the majority of the oxygen in political media for the foreseeable future — and it’s critical that it does not pull the harsh spotlight off the dangerous and nakedly partisan work being done by House Republicans to protect their insurrectionist leader and undermine our democracy,” the memo said.
The key area the memo addresses regards the House GOP’s investigations of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg after he prosecuted a falsification of business records case against Trump. The House Judiciary Committee has requested testimony from the District Attorney’s Office regarding the indictment, arguing it is doing its job of oversight by examining the office.
“Even before the indictments were unsealed House Republicans rushed to claim that the charges were politically motivated,” the memo said. “In truth, the indictments authorized by the grand jury reinforce what we’ve known and seen time and again: Trump will violate the law to gain and hold power. What shocks the conscience, though, is the degree to which House Republicans will use their majority status to protect Trump’s criminality.”
Another area the group outlines as a way to tie House Republicans to Trump and the MAGA faction within the GOP includes claiming the Republicans are pushing for “an agenda supporting lawlessness.”

The 2024 elections will be pivotal for the GOP if it seeks to maintain control of the House of Representatives after winning a narrow majority in the 2022 midterm elections.
In the 2022 elections, the Republicans were expected to win a larger majority than what materialized. Now, Republicans are looking to 2024 and trying to avoid a similar showing that would force them back into the minority in the House.
