Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) says he believes the reason Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed a “constitutional carry” law behind closed doors was because he is “scared of the people.”

DeSantis signed the law, which makes it so residents are no longer required to obtain specific permits or pay additional fees to carry a gun outside their homes, last week, but Newsom claims he did not sign it at a public event because of unpopularity.

“They overwhelmingly oppose that position. I think the majority of NRA member probably oppose that position. No background checks? No background checks? Really I mean, no training? Why would you do that with weapons of war,” Newsom said.

The law did have the support of the National Rifle Association and similar laws exist in 25 other states in the country.

In further discussing gun laws, Newsom said the shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee last month, caused him to want to go on a tour of Republican-led states to combat the leaders of the states.

Newsom has long been a vocal opponent of DeSantis, who is seen as a likely Republican presidential contender for 2024. In the same interview, Newsom attacked DeSantis for looking weak in his recent responses to Trump saying it was “weakness masquerading as strength.”

In July 2022, Newsom ran advertisements in Florida denouncing DeSantis and calling on Floridians to move to the Golden State, dubbing it the state “where we still believe in freedom.” While in September 2022, Newsom sent a letter to the Justice Department demanding they prosecute Florida and Texas over transporting immigrants to liberal areas, including New York City and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. DeSantis quipped in response that Newsom’s “hair gel was interfering with his brain function.”

The California governor was in Florida on Thursday, visiting the New College of Florida and railed against restrictions on books in schools, along with other matters.

Newsom’s new “Campaign for Democracy” organization has led to speculation that he may be seeking a 2024 presidential bid, but he denied those rumors to Psaki.
