Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) threw jabs at Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), saying the Florida governor looked “weak” in his response to the indictment of former President Donald Trump by a Manhattan grand jury.

Newsom said that recent comments by DeSantis, including his allegations that Democrats are weaponizing the judicial system, do not make the Florida governor look strong.

“He just looked weak, weakness masquerading as strength,” Newsom said on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki.

The California governor also said that DeSantis is going to get “rolled” by Trump in the Republican primary in 2024 and that he should “wait a few years” and focus on governing the Sunshine State.

“He is going to get by rolled by Trump. Trump’s just gonna roll him, thumped. Honestly, if I were offering him political advice I would tell him to pack up and wait a few years. And actually do some of the hard work, which actually includes governing not just identity and cultural war,” Newsom said.

Newsom then listed off some areas where DeSantis could improve his governing, including the high cost of living in the state.

“Come back as a more seasoned and capable leader with a little humility. Which, by the way, he could use a little of,” Newsom said.

Newsom has long been a vocal opponent of DeSantis, who is seen as a likely Republican presidential contender for 2024.

In July 2022, Newsom ran advertisements in Florida denouncing DeSantis and calling on Floridians to move to the Golden State, dubbing it the state “where we still believe in freedom.”

In September 2022, Newsom sent a letter to the Justice Department demanding they prosecute Florida and Texas over transporting immigrants to liberal areas, including New York City and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. DeSantis quipped in response that Newsom’s “hair gel was interfering with his brain function.”

Newsom was in Florida on Thursday, visiting the New College of Florida and railed against restrictions on books in schools, along with other matters.

The California governor’s new “Campaign for Democracy” organization has led to speculation that he may be seeking a 2024 presidential bid, but he denied those rumors to Psaki.
