Stimulus update: Deadline to apply for California city’s $500 guaranteed income program is seven days away

Residents of El Monte, California, have one week left to apply for a guaranteed income program that would give them $500 every month for a year.
A total of 125 applicants will be selected for this program, which is intended to assist mothers in the city. Applications for the program opened on March 27 and will remain open until April 15, according to the city.

“Individuals selected to participate in the program will be issued a debit card,” a city manager’s office representative told the Washington Examiner.
“Every month, the city will load $500 on the debit card. Individuals can use it to pay for goods and services at any location that accepts debit cards. The city will provide training on how to use the debit card for participants.”
Those interested in applying for this program can do so in person at the city manager’s office, online, or by mail.
To be eligible, an applicant must live within the city limits of El Monte, be a single female head of household with no spouse or partner in the house, and have children younger than 17.

Additionally, applicants must have a verified income at or below the federal poverty line and be able to show a need for financial assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic. They must also be able to submit documents verifying school enrollment, proof of residency, proof of income, and a government-issued ID.
The recipients of this program will be selected by April 26, and the city anticipates the first payment will be sent out on June 1, according to the representative.
