Walmart announced Thursday a plan to build an electric vehicle charging network at thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club stores across the country by 2030.

The company said this is an attempt to make EV ownership “more accessible, reliable, convenient and affordable.”

In a press release, Walmart said the new charging stations would be in addition to the ones already at 280 of its U.S. facilities. At these locations, there are already roughly 1,300 EV fast-charging stations.

“We’re leading the charge to help make electric vehicle ownership more convenient, reliable & affordable. We intend to build our own EV fast-charging network at thousands of stores & clubs by 2030, in addition to the 1,300 charging stations we have now,” the company tweeted.

According to the company, there is “a store or club located within 10 miles of approximately 90% of Americans.” It says this puts the store in a position to make ownership and charging of EVs easier for everyday people, regardless of if they “live in rural, suburban or urban areas.”

This comes as some reports indicate the Biden administration is inching closer to announcing some of the largest-scale curbs to car emissions.

The announcement will reportedly take place on Wednesday in Detroit. According to Bloomberg, new regulations will affect carbon dioxide from tailpipe emissions as well as smog-forming nitrogen oxide and other sources of pollution from vehicles that are manufactured between 2027 and 2032.

The standards are further expected to govern cars and light trucks.
