Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) surpassed his top California Senate rivals on the fundraising circuit during the first quarter, according to early data released from the top campaigns.
Schiff’s campaign touted a $6.5 million haul on Thursday, bringing his war chest up to $24.5 million in financial firepower on hand. Meanwhile, Rep. Katie Porter’s (D-CA) campaign announced a $4.5 million windfall, and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) touted a $1.4 million campaign intake.

His campaign hailed the fundraising as “the most any Democratic Senate candidate has ever raised at this point in the cycle.”
California’s Democratic Senate primary is shaping up to be one of the fiercest interparty melees in the country. All three members of Congress are seeking to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
Under the primary system in the Golden State, the top two Democratic hopefuls could wind up squaring off in the general election. The race also could become one of the most expensive in the country.
During the 2016 election cycle, Vice President Kamala Harris’s battle against then-Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) for the Senate slot spilled over into the general election.
Democrats have splintered nationally over the contest. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has endorsed Schiff, a lead investigator in the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump and a lead impeachment manager during the second impeachment.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) threw her weight behind her onetime student Porter. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), widely speculated as a possible contender before bowing out of consideration last month, backed Lee.

“None of those are,” he quipped. McCarthy expressed optimism that there are some Republicans who could carve out a pathway to victory in the traditionally Democratic stronghold seat.
