The indictment of former President Donald Trump could open the door to a flood of politicized prosecutions, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said on Wednesday.
Comer recounted conversations he had with two Republican lawyers who were eager to “go after the Bidens” in apparent retaliation for the criminal charges lodged against the former president.

“He’s overstepped,” Comer told Fox and Friends, referring to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D). “And I’ll tell you one of the things that I don’t think it’s been picked up a lot, that’s going to be a problem.”
“I had two calls yesterday, one from a county attorney in Kentucky and one from a county attorney in Tennessee. They were Republicans, obviously,” he said. “They wanted to know if there are ways they can go after the Bidens. And they’ve opened up a can of worms. They set precedents now that we can’t go back on.”

Trump was arraigned Tuesday and entered a “not guilty” plea on 34 counts of falsifying business records for what prosecutors alleged amounted to a “catch and kill” scheme that violated election laws in 2016.
An unsealed indictment and fact sheet revealed that the case features three people to whom Trump allegedly funneled hush money payments. The trio includes a Trump Tower doorman, former porn star Stormy Daniels, and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
Bragg said at a press conference that the payments were an in-kind campaign contribution violating state and federal laws. He also accused Trump of committing tax fraud.
Trump has forcefully denied wrongdoing and blasted the indictment as election interference. He is the first former or sitting United States president to be slapped with criminal charges.

Comer has been investigating the Biden family’s business dealings since taking control of the powerful Oversight Committee earlier this year. He also signaled that Republicans are weighing their options against Bragg.
“We’re going to try and figure out a path moving forward,” he said. “This is very serious.”
