Incumbent Democratic Rep. Katie Porter defeats Scott Baugh for California House seat

Incumbent Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) secured a win for House Democrats on Thursday, marking the party’s latest win during the midterm elections despite not being called until the week after Election Day.

With 96% of precincts reporting, the Associated Press called the race for California’s 47th District in Porter’s favor, defeating Republican challenger Scott Baugh by 8,000 votes and with 51.6% of the total vote. Porter has represented the district since 2018.

Porter is representing one of the seats in Orange County. Porter resides in a subdivision of the University of California, Irvine, according to Fox News. Porter campaigned on making college more affordable to state residents, being pro-abortion rights, and “standing up to big corporations.”

Baugh, a native of Huntington Beach, meanwhile centered his campaign on several issues championed by the Republican Party during the midterm cycle, including the economy, crime, and education.

Republicans flipped the House of Representatives by a slim margin during the 2022 midterm elections but failed to secure the Senate, marking a disappointing election cycle that predicted Republicans would see a red wave.
