Black Panther director developing X-Files reboot with ‘diverse cast’

The X-Files original series creator, Chris Carter, revealed more details about a planned reboot of the iconic series and shared that a “diverse cast” will be an important part of its new direction.
“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So, he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory,” Carter revealed on the CBC podcast On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko.

Coogler is the director of Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Creed. His production company Proximity Media currently has a five-year exclusive deal with Disney Television. He is an award-winning filmmaker with four NAACP Image Awards, four Black Reel Awards, and two Academy Award nominations.
Carter added, “We’re so steeped in conspiracies now. The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think that it would be a different show.”
The X-Files premiered in 1993 and lasted until 2002, before returning for a comeback season in 2016 with Hollywood stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson starring as FBI Special Agents Mulder and Scully.
The reboot will presumably be without its original stars, Duchovny and Anderson.
In a 2021 interview, Duchovny remained open to any future projects.
“I don’t just say no to things like that. It’s not how I function,” the former X-Files co-star said.
His co-star Anderson has expressed that she wouldn’t be interested in returning to the series.
“It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is,” she said speaking at the TCA press tour in 2018.
Duchovny reacted to his co-star Anderson ruling out any kind of return.

“I know what Gillian said, but there’s no reason for me to say anything like that,” Duchovny said. “Maybe she said it just so that people would stop asking her.
In 2017, Anderson commented that The X-Files needed more gender diversity in their all-male writing team, saying: “I believe we can do better.”
