Suspected driver involved in horror crash that injured 25 police recruits arrested

The suspected driver of the car that crashed into 25 police recruits has been arrested, police stated Thursday.
Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and is charged with attempted murder of a peace officer or officers after allegedly driving a vehicle into multiple officers during a training exercise, according to police. Additional charges against him are pending, and no bail has been granted for him at this time, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation and will share additional information as it becomes available,” the statement read. “Homicide investigators intend to present this case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office this Friday for filing considerations.”

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning when the driver was on the wrong side of the road and crashed into the recruits before crashing into a light pole, according to police. A total of five people were left in critical condition, with 16 others experiencing minor injuries and four others having moderate injuries, according to a press conference held by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
All who were injured in the crash were taken to area hospitals, police said. The injuries the recruits sustained from the collision with the vehicle include loss of limbs, head trauma, and broken bones, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said during a press conference held on Wednesday.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department could not provide an update to the Washington Examiner on how many victims are still hospitalized or where they are in their recovery.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the recruits did not have alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, based on a Breathalyzer test, Villanueva said.
