Former President Donald Trump is “likely” to turn himself into authorities as early as Tuesday of next week, but he won’t be placed in handcuffs at the time of his arrest, according to his lawyer.
The expected surrender comes after a grand jury in Manhattan voted on Thursday to indict the former president on charges related to a hush money case that emerged during Trump’s first White House bid in 2016. The indictment marks the first time a former president has been criminally charged.
The timeline of Trump’s arraignment is not entirely clear, although Manhattan officials said they are working with the former president’s legal team to coordinate a surrender. Trump has denied the charges and said he would “vigorously fight” the “political persecution” in court.
