Twitter terminating free blue check verification system

Twitter announced on Thursday the company is terminating its free blue verification check system starting next month.
“On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks,” Twitter tweeted.

The free blue checks were traditionally awarded to verified accounts belonging to figures of public interest, including officials, journalists, and celebrities, per their request.
Starting next week, checks will be made available through the subscription service Twitter Blue.
The cost for the subscription service is $8 per month, and it is meant as both a tool to boost the company’s revenue and stymie bots and trolls, the report noted.
Accounts will also be able to undo and edit tweets through Twitter Blue, which was relaunched in December following initial problems regarding impersonators.
Another difference will be that Twitter Blue will not require account holders to be notable to receive a blue check.
The only conditions for the service are that the account must be nondeceptive, older than 90 days, and active.
“Any individual person’s Twitter account affiliated with a verified organization is automatically verified,” Musk tweeted Friday.

Different color checks will also be assigned for different accounts.
Individual users will receive blue checks, companies and brands will receive gold checks, and government accounts will receive gray checks.
