A woman escaped confinement after she was held against her will in a locked closet for two months by a man she previously had a relationship with, Tennessee police said this week.

In a statement Wednesday, the Dyersburg Police Department said they apprehended 30-year-old Brenton Bell four days after they received a report of a possible kidnapping. Officers said when they responded to the report, they found a woman hiding under a new construction home in the city.

“The 40-year-old victim had facial cuts and was reported to be very thin, weighing under 100 pounds,” the police department said, adding that the woman told them for about two months, she was forced to stay in a closet shut by a locking device with a cable and only allowed to leave the space for an hour a day. “The victim was provided very limited food and no bathroom facilities.”

Bell was identified as the suspect and, before being arrested, was wanted for aggravated kidnapping. Police said the woman told them she used to be in a relationship with Bell but that it turned “physically abusive.”

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and later released and will be given additional services for victims of domestic violence, according to police.
