Former MSNBC host Toure Neblett has compared the term “woke” to the “N-word.”

“At this point woke is a slur,” Neblett, who once co-hosted MSNBC’s The Cycle, tweeted. “The way the right uses it is an undercover way of saying “those people,” or “non-white people.” It’s a polite way of saying the n-word but in this case the n-word includes Blacks, LGBTQ folks, and other marginalized groups.”

Neblett’s comparison set off a firestorm of debate across Twitter as he refuted others’ definitions of the term, calling them “white victimhood,” “revenge,” or “buzzwords.”

In response, conservative commentator Christopher F. Rufo blasted Neblett for playing “Left-wing Mad-Libs.”

“You’re playing left-wing Mad-Libs,” Rufo tweeted. “When you say that ‘woke’ now means the ’n-word’ and includes ‘LGBTQ folks’ in order to uphold ‘white supremacy,’ you degrade the meaning of all of those words in order to whip up fantasies that justify your political ideology.”

Neblett maintained his stance, saying the term “woke” had become a “dog whistle way of saying the N-word.”

Former CNN host Soledad O’Brien also recently purported that the use of the term had racial undertones.

In February, O’Brien blasted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s comments about the “Black National Anthem” being played ahead of the Super Bowl.

“So reporters.. for many people ‘woke’ means Black people. Or more likely–a racist slur. So maybe do a better job in interviews when people talk about ‘wokeness’ mmkay?” O’Brien tweeted.
