Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson reportedly mistreated her campaign staff and displayed frequent bouts of “uncontrollable rage” while running for the party nomination in 2020.

Williamson boasted of a career as a spiritual leader and self-help guru in her 2020 presidential campaign while running against a crowded field of Democratic candidates. However, working for the bestselling author was a different story — and staff members often experienced verbal and emotional abuse, according to Politico.

“It would be foaming, spitting, uncontrollable rage,” one former staffer told the outlet. “It was traumatic. And the experience, in the end, was terrifying.”

Throughout the election cycle, Williamson would subject her staffers to unpredictable episodes of anger that went beyond the typical stress levels of a presidential campaign, the staffers said. In some instances, Williamson would throw her phone at staff members or yell at people until they began to cry.

The outbursts could get so loud that on at least four occasions, hotel staff would come to Williamson’s room to assess the situation, according to the campaign staffers.

Williamson denied the claims as “slanderous” and “categorically untrue,” saying she had never thrown a phone at someone. However, she did acknowledge at least one occasion when a hotel employee came to check on her room because of the noise levels.

“I find it hard to believe that people in politics have never raised their voice before,” she told the outlet.

Williamson could also get physically angry in some circumstances, the staffers said, recounting one instance in which the author got so angry about the logistics of a campaign trip she began pounding a car door until her hand swelled. Williamson later went to an urgent care facility to treat the injury, they said.

The presidential candidate confirmed to Politico that she visited the urgent care after hitting the car door but justified her behavior by noting a “car door is not a person.”

“I would never be physically hurtful to a person,” she said.

Some staffers acknowledged that female candidates can be subjected to unfair criticism regarding their leadership, but they also emphasized that Williamson’s actions violated what would be considered acceptable behavior for any leader.

Staffers said they kept quiet for years because they were required to sign nondisclosure agreements upon being hired.

“The message was: ‘Don’t f*** with me because I will make your life a living hell,’” one aide told Politico. “So no one f***ed with her.’”

The allegations come after Williamson announced she would be running against President Joe Biden for the party nomination in 2024, making her the first Democrat to challenge him as he eyes a second term. Her candidacy is considered to be a long shot, but staffers said they felt motivated to come forward now so voters could know whom they were voting for.

“There was a period after the campaign ended where there was intense trauma bonding,” another aide said. “It was like, ‘What the fuck did we just go through?’”
