The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is holding a hearing Thursday to examine how to protect public health and the environment in the wake of the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
The hearing, led by Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE) and ranking member Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), will focus on the public health concerns that have plagued the community surrounding East Palestine since the toxic train derailment last month.

The hearing is expected to include testimony from Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Bob Casey (D-PA), whose communities and states have been the most directly affected by the derailment.
Representatives from Norfolk Southern, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Ohio EPA, the Beaver County Emergency Services, and the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission will also testify in the hearing.

The hearing comes a few days after the National Transportation Safety Board opened its own investigation into the safety culture at Norfolk Southern, the company responsible for the crash. Another Norfolk train derailed in Ohio recently, but it was not carrying toxic chemicals.
