Stimulus update: Direct $1,050 relief payments loaded onto debit cards to be sent out by January

For California residents who have not yet received up to $1,050 to help offset rising inflation, a second round of payments will be sent soon.
Starting in October, officials began distributing the payments as part of the state’s Middle Class Tax Refund, sending around $9.5 billion to California residents. The money can either be delivered through direct deposit or as a prepaid debit card, which may take a bit longer to get in the mail.

In order to qualify, residents’ 2020 tax returns must have been filed by Oct. 15, 2021, and filers cannot be listed as dependents. The payments will vary based on a person’s marital status and annual income.
Married couples who file jointly could get between $400 and $1,050, while heads of household could receive anywhere from $200 to $700, depending on one’s income and the number of dependents.

State officials began a second round of sending out the one-time payment to qualifying residents on Oct. 28, noting the money should arrive by mid-November. It’s uncertain how long it will take for everything to be disbursed, with the last of payments expected to arrive by the end of January.
