Tax season 2023 is well under way, and anyone who has yet to start their return ought to consider these free options for filing this year.
Taxes can be done for free via certain programs if the only thing needed to file is a simple return or if a filer meets certain income requirements. All of these options will be available for eligible filers to partake in ahead of the April 18 deadline when taxes are due, according to CNBC.
IRS Free File
The IRS has a site that allows any taxpayer with an adjusted gross income of $73,000 or less to use it in filing his or her taxes.
To use the program, taxpayers will need their adjusted gross income for 2022 and Social Security number, as well as any other required tax forms. After that, taxpayers can choose what software to use, which will guide them through the process of filing with simple questions.

Online tax software
Many online tax software programs offer free versions, though they typically come with limited features and support. TurboTax is one of the tax companies to offer a free version for tax filers to use, and its program is useful for straightforward returns.
Volunteer-run programs
IRS volunteer-run programs, such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, can allow some filers to submit their returns for free. This program offers free tax help to anyone who needs it, generally including those who make $60,000 or less, those with disabilities, and those with limited English-language proficiency.
A taxpayer will need to visit a local office, possibly with an appointment made ahead of time. Locations offering this service can be found using the IRS website.
