Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) decision to hand over security footage from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to Fox News host Tucker Carlson creates “grave security risks” to the Capitol complex.

Schumer wrote in a “Dear Colleague” letter Wednesday that the public knowledge of the placement of security cameras could constitute one of the “worst security risks since 9/11” and objected to Carlson’s involvement. McCarthy said the new GOP House majority would ensure a transparent investigation of the events of Jan. 6, especially by reviewing the evidence still in the Jan. 6 select committee’s cache.

KEVIN MCCARTHY OFFERS TUCKER CARLSON ACCESS TO FOOTAGE FROM JAN. 6 RIOTS

“Giving someone as disingenuous as Tucker Carlson exclusive access to this type of sensitive information is a grave mistake by Speaker McCarthy that will only embolden supporters of the Big Lie and weaken faith in our democracy,” Schumer wrote. “Let me be clear, the Senate strongly objects to the release of this sensitive security footage to Tucker Carlson and Fox News. The speaker — nor any elected official — does not have the right to jeopardize the safety of senators nor Senate and Capitol staff for their own political purposes. Period.”

McCarthy gave 41,000 hours of surveillance footage to Carlson’s crew, including camera access from several angles on the Capitol grounds during the riot. He previously said the public deserved to see what happened during the riot rather than relying on the Jan. 6 committee’s report, which mainly focused on former President Donald Trump’s culpability.

“There was never any legitimate reason for this footage to remain secret,” Carlson said. “If there was ever a question that’s in the public’s interest to know, it’s what actually happened on Jan. 6. By definition, this video will reveal it. It’s impossible for me to understand why any honest person would be bothered by that.”

The footage is expected to air on Carlson’s show in the coming weeks.
