A 10-foot-long alligator killed an elderly Florida woman on Monday after it dragged her into a lake while she walked her dog.

The attack occurred around 12 p.m. at the Spanish Lakes Fairways community in St. Lucie County, when residents said the large alligator emerged from the water and snatched her, according to a report.

The alligator first went after the dog before turning its attention to the elderly woman, witnesses said.

Authorities responded to the scene and a St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was deployed to locate the predator.

Trappers discovered the alligator, estimated to weigh between 600 to 700 lbs, at the bottom of the lake, where it was captured.

“He fought pretty good. Definitely fought pretty good,” Nuisance Alligator trapper Robert Lilly said.

“Snagged him on the bottom. He never surfaced. He stayed down the whole time. Got a second hook in him and then a hard line in him so we could get him up.”

It is lawful to remove any nuisance gator over 4 feet in length, according to a report.

The identity of the victim has not been confirmed, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission maintains the rarity of alligator-related injuries, the report noted.

“The FWC places the highest priority on public safety and administers a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) to address complaints concerning specific alligators believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property,” a FWC statement read.
