Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Thursday that he will not enforce capital punishment in the state.

While speaking at Mosaic Community Church in west Philadelphia, he told community members that “the commonwealth shouldn’t be in the business of putting people to death. Period.”

“This is a fundamental statement of morality. Of what’s right and wrong,” he continued.

Shapiro added, “I’m respectfully calling on the General Assembly to work with me to abolish the death penalty in Pennsylvania once and for all.”

Pennsylvania is one of 27 states where capital punishment is legal. However, some of these states have governor-imposed moratoriums.

“I know that there are people on both sides of the aisle who agree with me on this, and there are those who don’t,” Shapiro told listeners. “I believe we should work together.”

Shapiro was elected in the 2022 gubernatorial election when he faced off against Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Doug Mastriano. Previously, Shapiro was the state’s attorney general since 2017.
