Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) encouraged Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to sit out the 2024 presidential battle and continue serving as governor.

Palin further voiced confidence in former President Donald Trump‘s odds of clinching the party nod and suggested that competitive primaries could be a net positive for the GOP.

DESANTIS SCOFFS AT QUESTION ABOUT 2024 AS HALEY ENTERS RACE

“DeSantis doesn’t need to [run]. I envision him as our president someday, but not right now. Everybody I speak with in Florida love[s] him. And he does set the tone for, I’d say, every other governor in the nation,” Palin told Newsmax. “I think he’s our best governor. And he should stay governor for a bit longer.”

Trump threw his weight behind Palin in the race to succeed the late Rep. Don Young (R-AK) for Alaska’s at-large district during the 2022 election cycle. She was ultimately bested in a special election, then again in the general election last year by Rep. Mary Peltola (D-AK).

DeSantis has consistently polled as Trump’s top hypothetical GOP primary foe in the 2024 election scrum. Thus far, he has been coy about his election plans, even scoffing at such questions, but is reportedly eyeing a possible summertime campaign launch.

“I’m all about healthy, competitive primaries,” Palin said about the primary race. “That makes everybody debate more articulately and work harder and let the people know what [their] records are and visions for this country are. And so, I love healthy debate and competitive primaries.”

Palin was the Republican nominee for vice president in 2008 when she was 44. She resigned from the Alaska governorship before the end of her first term.

Palin also took note of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s recent entrance into the 2024 fray, contending that it is gutsy to challenge Trump.

“When you talk about the specific people, the individual people who are looking at putting their hat in the ring,” Plain said, “they got a lot of guts thinking they’re gonna go up against Trump.”

DeSantis is currently polling second behind Trump in a hypothetical 2024 race, according to the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate.
