Sturgeon is the country’s longest-serving first minister. It is not yet clear when exactly she will leave office, but a source close to the first minister told BBC, “She’s had enough.”

In June of last year, Scotland’s leader announced plans for a referendum in October 2023 for independence from the United Kingdom.

Sturgeon, a proponent of Scottish independence, pushed for another independence vote in the aftermath of the 2016 Brexit vote. In the 2016 referendum, Britain as a whole voted to leave the European Union, but Scotland voted to remain.
