Millions of people remain eligible to receive COVID-19 stimulus payments that would be worth a combined $3,200. But the deadline to file a simplified tax return is quickly approaching.

The deadline for individual filers with little or no income to file a simplified tax return and check their eligibility for the unclaimed payments or child tax credits is on Tuesday. According to the Government Accountability Office, around 9 million or 10 million people who did not get the payments may be eligible.

SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME PAYMENT: $841 CHECK TO BE SENT TO MILLIONS IN 21 DAYS

Those with a yearly income of less than $75,000 or joint filers who made less than $150,000 qualified for the three stimulus checks. Those who do not file income taxes because of how little they earn have until Tuesday to fill out simplified tax return forms to see if they can receive any of the relief payments.

Families with children are also eligible for the child tax credit, which seeks to reduce financial and food insecurity. The credits benefited about 84% of children from July to December 2021.

Congress approved $931 billion worth of stimulus checks as part of economic relief plans during the coronavirus pandemic for nearly 165 million people in 2020 and 2021. The sum was approved in three waves, two of which were signed into law by then-President Donald Trump in 2020, and a third COVID-19 stimulus bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden in March 2021.
