Michigan State University shooting: What we know about the incident

A shooting at Michigan State University on Monday evening left at least three people dead and five injured.

As police continue to investigate the shooting, here is what we know about the incident that put the university on lockdown for several hours.

How did the shooting unfold?

The shooting began just before 8:18 p.m. local time at an academic building on campus, Berkey Hall, with gunfire later reported at a recreation center. Police arrived at the first location within minutes of shots being fired, and university authorities issued a lockdown of the campus.

A manhunt continued for a suspect for several hours until police found the suspected shooter had killed himself off campus. The lockdown order at the school was lifted just before 12:30 a.m. local time.

What do we know about the suspect?

Police say the suspected shooter was 43-year-old Anthony McRae, who they described as a short black male who was wearing a mask and was not affiliated with the university. Police said he killed himself after the shooting.

Michigan State Police said a caller’s tip led officers to find McRae.

What do we know about the victims?

As of Tuesday morning, police said three students were killed during the shooting, but they did not release other details about the victims. Of the five people who have been reported as injured, all five were students and were hospitalized Monday evening in critical condition. The names of the injured have not been released.

How is Michigan State University reacting?

Michigan State University said it has canceled all classes, athletics, and on-campus activities for Tuesday and Wednesday as it investigates the shootings. The school announced it would only have essential staff on campus Tuesday and Wednesday.

The shooting happened only a day before the fifth anniversary of the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people were killed. The shooter in that incident was sentenced to life in prison last year after narrowly escaping the death penalty.
