Trump lawyers went before grand jury for classified documents inquiry: Report

Last month, two attorneys for former President Donald Trump reportedly went before a grand jury with ties to the special counsel investigation into the classified documents found at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago home.
Lawyers Christina Bobb and Evan Corcoran appeared before the grand jury in early January, the Wall Street Journal reported. Notably, Bob signed a letter in June last year, attesting that all classified documents, to the best of her knowledge, were relinquished to the government.

Despite Bobb’s sworn statement, federal authorities embarked upon the bombshell Aug. 8, 2022, search on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where they found a tranche of files bearing classification markings.
In a court filing after the Mar-a-Lago search and seizure, DOJ officials wrote that the discovery of sensitive material “cast serious doubt” on her sworn statement. Revelations of Bobb’s letter sparked speculation that she could face legal jeopardy.
However, her letter reportedly had a disclaimer to shield her in case additional classified documents later surfaced at Mar-a-Lago. She signed the letter after a grand jury subpoena demanded assurances Trump no longer possessed sensitive material. Bobb also met with federal investigators in October.
Bobb was identified as “Individual 2” in an affidavit for the Aug. 8 raid. Corcoran was referred to as “counsel” in the document. Corcoran previously defended Steve Bannon against contempt of Congress charges lodged against him for defying Jan. 6 committee subpoenas. Bannon was found guilty but is working to appeal that.
Special Counsel Jack Smith, whose appointment was announced last year after Trump debuted his 2024 campaign, has reportedly been firing off subpoenas quickly. He is tasked with spearheading the DOJ’s inquiry regarding the classified documents, the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, and the coinciding efforts to challenge the 2020 election.
The DOJ has been examining possible obstruction of justice and violations of the Espionage Act in its investigation into the documents found at Mar-a-Lago, according to court documents. Trump has denied wrongdoing, stressing a president can declassify content just “by thinking of it.”
So far, a bevy of top officials with links to Trump has appeared before or been subpoenaed by the grand jury and DOJ investigators, including former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, Wolf’s top deputy Ken Cuccinelli, and more.

Trump’s team has reportedly turned over additional information to the DOJ recently. On Friday, his legal team handed over a folder that contained files marked classified.
Trump’s lawyers also recently relinquished a laptop of a current Trump aid that allegedly had sensitive files copied on it, sources told ABC News. DOJ officials are also investigating President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence’s stewardship of classified material.
