Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), a white woman, said that a black woman should fill Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat, which Porter is running for.

Feinstein, 89, has occupied the position for roughly 30 years. She is expected to retire after her current term ends in 2024. Her age led many to speculate that she may be forced to retire before her term was up — a scenario that would require Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint another candidate in her position.

Porter, who is running for the position, said Newsom should appoint a black woman to the position if Feinstein retires early, seemingly disqualifying herself.

“The governor has made that commitment publicly to the people of California, and I think elected officials should keep their promises,” Porter said in an interview on NBC4’s News Conference.

“I think there’s a reality that we need more diversity of voices in our Congress, we need more people with different kinds of experiences and that means we do need more black people in the Senate, we need more black women in particular,” she continued.

She also advocated for herself in the 2024 race, even though that would mean displacing the hypothetical black woman she was advocating.

“I have a track record for fighting for the very kinds of issues that make a difference in the lives of black Americans and black communities,” she said.

“Black Americans do not get people helping them with issues like healthcare, with housing, with being cheated by scam artists, and those are some of the fights I’ve taken on.”

Porter opened the contest against Feinstein in January. Porter has since been joined in the race by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). Schiff boasts $21 million in his campaign war chest, while Porter has roughly $7.4 million.
