Twitter announced that it would allow premium subscribers to post 4000-character tweets, significantly changing the platform’s formatting to encourage subscriptions and generate enough revenue to help pay off the company’s $13 billion debt.
The platform announced that it was launching the new feature on Wednesday. The new feature is one of several items promoted by CEO Elon Musk to make Twitter Blue desirable.
“Need more than 280 characters to express yourself?” Twitter Blue posted. “We know that lots of you do … and while we love a good thread, sometimes you just want to Tweet everything all at once. we get that. so we’re introducing longer Tweets.”

The new 4000-character tweets will be visible to all users and include all regular functions, such as video hosting, pictures, and polls. Free users will continue to have 280-character tweets available to them.
The platform has been seeking additional sources of revenue after its advertising revenue dropped more than 40% in 2022 after Musk took over the company. It has tried to reestablish trust with advertisers through Super Bowl-themed advertising deals, and the social media outlet has also allowed political advertising and broached discussions of sharing revenue.
