Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) called for “new leadership” ahead of President Joe Biden‘s State of the Union address Tuesday, saying that Biden will brush over problems that ordinary people see with their own eyes in his speech.

Scott does not expect Biden to discuss high inflation or gas prices at the State of the Union, saying that he expects Biden to deliver a “song and dance show” to tell the public that things are better than they are.

“Gas is high, electricity is high, eggs in California are almost $10,” Scott said. “We have to do better. We deserve better. That means we need a change in leadership in order for us to put America back on the right path.”

Scott slammed Biden’s hesitation to take out the Chinese spy balloon as well, calling it a “dereliction of duty.” He said the slow action from Biden’s administration “imperils people throughout the world.”

The administration had an opportunity on Jan. 31 to take the balloon out, Scott said, and it chose not to.

“One of the things when you have weakness on the global stage, and Biden has presented weakness, not strength. … This is another indication that China assumes that he is weak,” Scott said.

Scott laughed when asked if he would cheer for Biden at the State of the Union, as he most likely will talk about how he ordered to shoot the balloon down.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “It was literally a dereliction of duty to wait six, seven days before he acted. That is not in the American people’s best interest.”

Scott, who gave the first rebuttal to Biden’s State of the Union in 2022, said he hopes this year’s Republican rebuttal highlights how the GOP will work to improve education and the economy.

“Talk about that American greatness starts with [the] people, not the government,” Scott said of Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR), who is delivering this year’s rebuttal.

Scott, a rising star within the Republican Party, is arousing speculation about a 2024 presidential run. He hinted at a 2024 run in November during his Senate victory speech. He has stated that he is in his final six-year term in the Senate.
