Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) attacked Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) on Twitter Wednesday, calling his support for parental authority in their children’s education “so stupid.”

In response to a graphic with a quote from the senator on education, Swalwell said “Please tell me what I’m missing here. What are we doing next? Putting patients in charge of their own surgeries? Clients in charge of their own trials? When did we stop trusting experts. This is so stupid.”

The quote from Scott read “We are putting parents back in charge of their kids’ education.” Education has become a hot-button issue as Republicans are increasingly running on parental rights. With the advent of drag queen story hour and other such events, parents have become more conscious of what their children are being exposed to.

School board meetings have been the site of several confrontations across the country over inappropriate reading materials in classrooms and school libraries. Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) focus on education and parental rights is largely credited for his 2021 win in Virginia.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who pulled off a landslide victory against his Democratic opponent on Tuesday, also set his focus on education. This past spring, he signed the Parental Rights in Education Act, which “prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through 3rd grade” and requires schools to inform parents of changes and accommodations being made for their child regarding their “mental, emotional or physical health or well-being.”

“Republicans to parents: You know what’s best for your kid. You should be in charge. Democrats to parents: “Experts” know what’s best for your kid. If you don’t agree then you’re stupid,” said Scott’s spokeswoman Caroline Anderegg in response to Swalwell’s tweet.

Other social media users took issue as well, with the tweet racking up more than 1,400 quote tweets, most of which were critical.

“…? patients dictate what they want done, whether they want it done, and how they want it done. and the attorney is beholden to the client…. more relevantly, and unlike our education system, if you don’t like your doctor or lawyer, you can fire them and go someplace else,” wrote the Washington Examiner’s T. Becket Adams.

Several users pointed out Swalwell’s hypocrisy, claiming that he supports allowing children to be in charge of their own gender transition surgeries, despite now encouraging deferment to “experts.”

“‘Experts’ who taught our kids to hate their white classmates and hate their own bodies? Who engaged in school-wide conspiracies to secretly change our kids’ names and gender identities? Who shut down in-person learning for two years? Tell us more about the ‘experts’ you trust,” said Abigail Shrier, author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters.

Lawyers also responded to the representative’s criticism, pointing out that clients routinely choose and direct their attorneys.

Scott’s office did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
