Newsom signals support for gun control bill that would limit where guns can be carried

California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed his support for a new gun control measure that would limit where people can carry guns.
In a Wednesday press conference, Newsom touted the effectiveness of gun control measures and praised California for having some of the toughest gun laws in the country. However, he stressed that more needed to be done to combat gun violence and brought up a bill that would ban concealed carry weapons in churches, public libraries, zoos, amusement parks, playgrounds, banks, and all other privately owned businesses, unless the business explicitly allowed it, KCRA 3 reported.

“We’re saving lives, but we have more work to do. And this is part of this effort, and I couldn’t be again more proud to be with all of you at this time, and I cannot impress upon you more how much I look forward to signing this bill as soon as it gets to my desk,” he said.
Newsom also took the opportunity to bash Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. He said it was “remarkable” to be living in a “moment in time when you have states like Florida moving in the exact opposite direction. It was stated earlier this week, the governor of Florida wants to move without any permits or any consideration, no requirements whatsoever. None for training. Why should you be trained, despite all the evidence? Not even evidence. It’s not even — there’s no controversy here. Everything that was stated was factual.”
He went on to deride those who oppose gun control as “ideologues,” and he said that previous objections to the state’s gun control measures were “absurd.”
Newsom also stressed the need for the federal government to get involved in pushing gun control.
“The last few weeks remind us we’re not an island,” he said. “We need the federal government to participate.”
