MIDTERM ELECTIONS 2022: HERE ARE THE ISSUES NEW MEXICO VOTERS CARE ABOUT THE MOST

A poll conducted from July 19-25 by Global Strategy Group, a Democratic firm, found that Vasquez led Herrell by only 1 point, with Vasquez at 45% and Herrell at 44%. The poll, conducted among 500 likely voters, had a 4.9% margin of error, meaning the race between the two was incredibly close.

Herrell and Vasquez focused on different policies ahead of Tuesday’s election, with Herrell emphasizing inflation and border security. Vasquez, on the other hand, put more of a focus on improving border policy, due to the United States not giving immigrants “a fair opportunity to get in line in a predictable system.”

The 2022 midterm elections marked the first elections in the U.S. since Roe v. Wade’s overturning by the Supreme Court in June. Vasquez campaigned on abortion rights, while Herrell described herself as “pro-life” but in favor of exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. She has also stated that abortion access should be up to each state to decide rather than a unilateral decision by national politicians, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
