WATCH: DC Studios heads announce new slate of projects with different twists

New DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled a new slate of projects with different twists, including a Batman film that puts the spotlight on his murderous son, a Game of Thrones-style Wonder Woman series, and a unique animated series.
Gunn and Safran have cleaned house at DC Studios since taking over three months ago, and the string of new proposals featuring new characters and lesser-known heroes sees the comic giant going in a new direction, according to a Tuesday report.

“The stakes are massive for us and for Warner Bros. Discovery,” Safran said.
The new projects are the brainchild of a writers’ room convened by Gunn and Safran in the hopes of developing an overall story for a united DC Universe, the report noted.
Called “Chapter 1: God and Monsters,” the plan has been designed to put new proposals in development.
“One of our strategies is to take our diamond characters, which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and we use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know,” Gunn said.
“To build those lesser-known properties into the diamond properties of tomorrow,” Safran added.
New projects in Chapter 1 include Creature Commandos, an animated series by Gunn that tells the story of a team of classic monsters fighting Nazis; Waller, a series starring Viola Davis as she reprises her role as the morally gray head of a secret agency; and The Authority, a film about a superhero team that goes to extreme ends to protect the Earth.
Safran describes the characters in The Authority as “kind of like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. They know that you want them on the wall. Or at least they believe that.”
“One of the things of the DCU is that it’s not just a story of heroes and villains. Not every film and TV show is going to be about good guy vs. bad guy, giant things from the sky comes, and good guy wins. There are white hats, black hats, and gray hats,” Gunn said.
Projects with more familiar figures include Paradise Lost, a Game of Thrones-style drama following the powerful women and politics of Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira; Superman: Legacy, a Man of Steel feature that “focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way”; and two separate Batman projects.
The first is The Brave and the Bold, a story of “Bruce Wayne and also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a b****,” according to Gunn, who also said the project serves as the “introduction of the DCU Batman.”

The second is the sequel to 2022’s The Batman, which will see Robert Pattinson, who will not be in The Brave and the Bold, don the cape and cowl again for a crime saga set to hit theaters on Oct. 3, 2025, in The Batman Part II.
“2025 is going to be a very big year for DC,” Safran said. “Superman and Batman within the same year.”
