President Joe Biden celebrated the role his bipartisan infrastructure law is playing in modernizing rail and bringing “good-paying union jobs” to communities across the country.

Biden, speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new $450 million Frederick Douglas Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland, broadly reminisced about riding the train to and from Delaware during his tenure in the Senate and the region’s sorely needed rail upgrades.

The president explained how, through funding provided by the bipartisan infrastructure law, Maryland had brokered a deal with Amtrak to replace the existing tunnel system utilizing the North America’s Building Trades Unions and other organized labor.

“When the project is done, new trains will travel through this tunnel 110 miles an hour, instead of 30 miles an hour,” Biden stated. “MARC trains will go from here to Washington in 30 minutes. On an average weekday, that will eliminate nearly seven hours a day.”

“When America sees these projects popping up across the country, it sends a really important message. When we work together, there’s not a deep thing we can’t do. There’s nothing beyond our capacity. We can move this nation forward,” the president, who will take part in a similar ceremony Tuesday in New York, closed. “It has never been a good bet, never been a good bet to bet against America. Never. I can honestly say as I stand here today, I have never been more optimistic about America’s future.”
