Pennsylvania Republicans are looking at David McCormick as a top candidate to retire Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) in the state’s 2024 Senate race.

McCormick, who unsuccessfully ran for the GOP nomination for Senate in 2022, is seen by some as the correct candidate to take back one of the Keystone State’s Senate seats after one was lost in last year’s midterms.

DEMOCRATS’ ALREADY-UGLY CALIFORNIA SENATE FIGHT TAKES ANOTHER EARLY TURN

“Whereas there was a lot of division and thought of who should be the Senate and governor candidate in 2022, in 2024, every corner of geography and ideological persuasion in the Republican Party universally believe they’ve got to encourage Dave McCormick to run,” John Brabender, a GOP consultant, told the Hill.

Dr. Memhet Oz narrowly defeated McCormick in the Republican primary in 2022 after securing the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Oz then lost to then-Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D-PA) in the general election. Candidate quality was a major talking point in the aftermath of Oz’s defeat.

Brabender believes McCormick’s experience from the 2022 primary can create a winning campaign in 2024.

“He’s tested now. Running statewide for the first time is tough,” Brabender told the outlet. “Dave starts with a campaign that could start immediately and that is a big advantage.”

Pennsylvania is one of several Democrat-held Senate seats expected to be competitive in 2024. In general, the 2024 Senate races are expected to favor Republicans, with Democrats on defense in vulnerable seats in several Republican strongholds including Ohio, Montana, and West Virginia.
