The Israeli army killed at least nine Palestinians, including a 60-year-old woman, and wounded several others during a raid of the occupied West Bank on Thursday, Palestinian health officials said.
The Associated Press reported that the health officials said the violence took place while Israeli forces conducted a “fierce” operation in the Jenin refugee camp, a militant fortress in the West Bank. The number of people injured adds up to 16, Al Jazeera reported.

The violence comes during an extended period of unrest and marks one of the deadliest days since Israeli raids intensified at the end of last year. The Qatar-based news agency said that of the 16 injured, three are in critical condition.
The Israeli military told the Associated Press its forces were in the area, but as of 4:30 a.m. EST, the military did not give any other details. According to the news outlet, Israeli media reported that troops faced fire during the raid. At least one of the dead was identified as a militant.

Jenin is the city in the West Bank where Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed last May, likely, as the State Department announced, from Israeli gunfire. The death of Abu Akleh, who worked for Al Jazeera, became a point of international outrage. Israeli authorities have said they will not launch a criminal investigation into her death.
