Dallas Police Senior Cpl. Sergio Perez is crediting God for putting him in the right place at the right time after a simple stop by McDonald’s ended up saving a little boy’s life.

Perez drove to McDonald’s earlier this month with the intention of buying chicken nuggets as a training reward for his K-9 partner, Goro. Yet while waiting in the drive-thru line, Perez heard a woman screaming for help.

“I pulled up to see what was going on, and a female came around the corner holding a child on her shoulders, and she was yelling and screaming that she needed to get her child to the hospital because he was not breathing,” Perez told CBS DFW.

Perez began CPR on the 1-year-old boy while other officers arrived. Body-camera video showed them at work as the boy began to breathe.

“He’s breathing! He’s breathing, ma’am,” Perez told the boy’s mother.

“His eyes are blinking,” another officer said. “He’s moving, ma’am.”

Officers also reassured the boy, telling him, “We got you, buddy.”

“My training kicked in. I stayed calm and just kept talking to the child and reassuring mom that everything was gonna be OK,” Perez said. “I believe that God put me here that night for that reason, you know, because I normally don’t give Goro nuggets. But that night, since we were doing real good on training, I said, ‘You know what, my partner deserves some nuggets tonight.’”
