House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) privately praised his close relationship with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a report claims.
The two appeared to strike up an unlikely alliance in Congress, best shown in early January when Greene played a key role in winning some conservative hard-liners over to McCarthy’s side during his bid to become speaker. The relationship between the two allegedly goes even deeper than a simple alliance, with the two privately extolling the close relationship and camaraderie they hold, 20 insiders familiar with the matter told the New York Times.
“I will never leave that woman,” McCarthy reportedly told a friend recently. “I will always take care of her.”

The House speaker echoed this sentiment in an interview with the outlet, praising Greene’s political acumen.
“If you’re going to be in a fight, you want Marjorie in your foxhole,” he said. “When she picks a fight, she’s going to fight until the fight’s over. She reminds me of my friends from high school — that we’re going to stick together all the way through.”
Greene has likewise extolled her relationship with McCarthy and defended her role as one of his biggest public defenders over the reservations of her largely hard-liner base.
“If he sticks to [his agenda], [it] will easily vindicate me and prove I moved the conference to the right during my first two years when I served in the minority with no committees,” she said.
The two had a rocky start, with Greene blaming McCarthy for the stripping of her committee assignments during her first term. However, relations warmed when Greene was told by friends that McCarthy had repeatedly gone out of his way to defend her, even sending a legal representative to argue for hours with Twitter executives in an attempt to get her account reinstated. Their relationship quickly blossomed into one of genuine camaraderie, the New York Times reported.
The reasoning for McCarthy’s friendly stance toward Greene, despite apparent ideological differences, was his studying of the two previous Republican speakers, John Boehner (OH) and Paul Ryan (WI), the outlet claims. He came to reason that making an enemy of conservative hard-liners was a major miscalculation and sought to court Greene instead.

The relationship was described by the outlet as “symbiotic,” with Greene advocating McCarthy to conservative hard-liners hesitant to support him and McCarthy in turn giving her an outsize amount of legislative power, putting forth measures more appealing to hard-liners, such as auditing aid to Ukraine and repealing the vaccine mandate for members of the military.
