Democrat Chris Deluzio defeated Republican Jeremy Shaffer in the race to represent Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District.
The dual issues of the economy and abortion dominated the midterm race as the candidates fought to win the seat of departing incumbent Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA).
Deluzio appealed to voters with a message of economic populism, stressing the need to return manufacturing to Pennsylvania.
“We are in this fight for economic dignity, for union jobs, reproductive freedom, [to] bring our supply chains back home and start making more stuff and to keep our democracy strong,” he told a crowd in Mount Lebanon.
Deluzio has distanced himself from President Joe Biden and has broken with his party on the issue of fossil fuels, saying that fracking is currently needed to break the United States’s reliance on foreign energy.
Shaffer, meanwhile, emphasized the high rates of inflation experienced under President Joe Biden.
