This isn’t the first time Madonna has made headlines regarding religion. In 1989, she caused a firestorm when her hit song “Like a Prayer” featured a music video with her dancing in front of burning crosses and kissing a black Jesus. The Vatican denounced it. Pepsi, who signed Madonna to a multimillion-dollar deal and had filmed an ad featuring the song, later pulled it from the airwaves following the uproar.

The ad and video were at the time used to promote her “Blonde Ambition” world tour in 1990. On Tuesday, Madonna announced a new “Celebration” world tour, which will begin July 15 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
