Delta Air Lines was ranked as the top airline, and JetBlue was ranked as the worst airline for 2022 for several key areas of service.

The rankings, tabulated by the Wall Street Journal, considered on-time arrivals, canceled flights, extreme delays, two-hour tarmac delays, mishandled baggage, involuntary bumping of passengers, and complaints. The higher the ranking, the better the airline handled each operational area considered.

Delta ranked as the top airline when considering these metrics for the second year in a row. The Atlanta-based airline finished first out of nine airlines in three of the seven categories: on-time arrivals, canceled flights, and involuntary bumping of passengers.

JetBlue finished last out of nine major U.S. airlines for the second year in a row. The airline finished last in two categories: extreme delays and two-hour tarmac delays. And it finished second-to-last in on-time arrivals and canceled flights. The best category for the airline was involuntary bumping of passengers, in which the airline finished fourth.

Spirit Airlines, which is in the process of merging with JetBlue, finished in seventh place. The low-cost airline received a fourth-place ranking in the baggage handling category.

American Airlines, which finished last in the Wall Street Journal’s ranking in 2020, maintained its sixth-place ranking from 2021. The largest airline in the world ranked in the middle of the pack for most of the categories, only placing last in its handling of luggage.

Despite Southwest Airlines having a hectic holiday season — its systems were overwhelmed, resulting in canceled fights across the country for days on end — it finished third overall.

The Dallas-based airline finished first in the two-hour tarmac delay and complaint categories.

The rankings were tabulated with data from Anuvu and the Department of Transportation. For two-hour tarmac delays, mishandled baggage, and complaints, the data ended in Oct. 2022. For involuntary bumping of passengers, the data ended in Sept. 2022.
